Jesus' Genealogy

Quick trivia question, Jesus is the decendent of which son of David? (See Luke 3 and Matthew 1 to find out.)

Yesterday, I read Luke 3. According to this passage, it traces Jesus' fathers all the way to Adam. But as I flip back to Matthew 1, it says a different thing. Which version is true?

It is definitely interesting to see that Judah (and Tamar), and Boaz (and Ruth) are fathers of Jesus. Okay, maybe Boaz makes sense. But Judah? (For Judah and Tamar's story, see Genesis 38.) I thank God because He does use sinners to achieve marvalous things!

School is tough *sigh*, but God did not leave me. I hope this quarter will end soon (with all the work completed)!

Hey Justin, concerning the genealogy:

1.) David had two sons involved in the genealogy: Nathan and Solomon. Nathan was Mary's ancenstor while Solomon was Joseph's ancestor.

2.) Matthew wrote a legal genealogy, meaning that his genealogy was purely from Joseph's side of the family. Luke, on the other hand, had a biological genealogy. Those listed in Matthew weren't necessarily Jesus' biological ancestors, but because Jesus was adopted by Joseph, He inherited Joseph's family line.

3.) Luke mixed some of Mary's lineage into Joseph's, as it was impolite in that culture to mention the woman's alone.

Speaking of using sinners to do marvelous things, don't forget Rahab! Keep persevering Justin, God never lets go =] Visit us!

Just going to comment that both geneology's are correct, but I see you've already gotten a fairly eloquent explaination.  Hope you're doing well.
